On the Gold Coast the honest answer is that most homes want both. Engineered timber gives you real oak or Australian hardwood in the living areas, while a rigid core hybrid takes the kitchen, laundry and any room where water and sand come in on bare feet. The mistake is putting solid timber in a coastal home at all.
Start with the climate, not the colour
Burleigh, Palm Beach and the rest of the southern Gold Coast sit in warm, humid air for most of the year, and half the houses are within a few streets of salt water. Timber moves with moisture. A solid hardwood board takes that humidity in through the whole board, swells across the summer and shrinks back in the dry, which is how gaps and cupping happen. That is why we do not sell solid timber at all.
Engineered timber solves it by putting a real timber wear layer over a stable engineered core, so the board holds its shape in our humidity while still being genuine oak or Blackbutt on top. Hybrid solves it a different way: there is no timber to move in the first place.
What hybrid actually is
Hybrid, or SPC, is a rigid stone polymer core plank with a timber look printed and textured on the surface. Ours are water resistant, silica free and low VOC, with an IXPE acoustic underlay already bonded to the back and a Välinge 2G click lock on the edges. The click lock matters more than it sounds: it means the floor floats over the subfloor with no glue, goes down fast, and a damaged plank can be lifted and swapped later.
Because the core is rigid, it does not show the bumps in a slightly uneven slab the way soft vinyl does, and it does not swell when the laundry floods or the dog walks in off the beach.
Where engineered timber wins
- Living rooms, dining rooms and hallways, where you see and feel the floor most and a real timber grain earns its keep.
- Anywhere you want the floor to age. Real oak develops character. A print stays exactly as it was on day one.
- Homes being sold or valued. Buyers still read genuine timber as the premium option.
- Wide boards and herringbone. The Heritage oak boards are the widest we carry and the pattern work only really sings in real timber.
Where hybrid wins
- Kitchens, laundries and entries, where water on the floor is a when, not an if.
- Rental and investment properties. Hard wearing, easy to clean, and individual planks can be replaced.
- Homes with dogs, kids and a beach two minutes away. Sand and wet feet are what a rigid core was built for.
- Anyone who wants the floor down this week. The click lock and built in underlay make hybrid the quickest floor to get down.
The warranty is the same, and that is the point
Both our engineered timber and our SPC hybrid ranges carry a twenty five year residential surface wear warranty, with a five year term for commercial use. So the decision is not about which one lasts. It is about which one suits the room, and on the Gold Coast that usually means timber where you live and hybrid where you wash, cook and walk in from the beach.
How to decide in the showroom
Bring a photo of the room and tell us honestly what happens in it. Then walk on both. Full size boards of every range are on the floor at Burleigh Heads, and you can take samples home to see them in your own light. Most people who come in certain they want one or the other leave with a floor plan that uses both, and they are usually right to.
